Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage Policy

Last Updated: 12/10/2025

At DERIT – Domestic Emergency Readiness & Intelligence Tools (“DERIT,” “we,” “us,” “our”), we believe that artificial intelligence can enhance clarity, speed, and consistency in the creation of maps, templates, atlases, and other readiness-oriented tools.
This AI Usage Policy explains how and when we may use artificial intelligence within our creative, operational, or analytical processes.

By accessing the DERIT website or using DERIT products, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to the following AI-related terms.

1. Purpose of This AI Policy

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Disclose where and how AI may be used within DERIT’s workflows

  • Set expectations regarding AI-generated or AI-assisted content

  • Explain what AI does not do within DERIT’s systems

  • Reassure users that human oversight remains central to our products

  • Protect DERIT’s intellectual property and the safety of our users

This policy will evolve as technology develops and as DERIT’s product suite expands.

2. How DERIT Uses Artificial Intelligence

DERIT may use AI systems in limited, controlled, and human-supervised capacities to assist with:

2.1 Text Generation & Editing

AI tools may help with:

  • Drafting instructional text

  • Improving clarity or structure

  • Generating placeholder copy for new products

  • Creating SEO-optimized summaries or descriptions

All final text is reviewed by human editors before publication.

2.2 Data Cleaning & Normalization

AI may be used as an aid to:

  • Identify inconsistencies in publicly sourced data

  • Standardize formatting (states, counties, infrastructure labels, etc.)

  • Suggest corrections to mislabeled entries

AI suggestions are never accepted automatically; they are always verified manually.

2.3 Visual & Design Assistance

AI tools may help generate:

  • Conceptual mockups

  • Preliminary design layouts

  • Holder images for product previews

Final product graphics, icons, and maps are human-created or human-refined.

2.4 Internal Research Support

AI may be used to:

  • Summarize publicly available documents

  • Suggest structural layouts for manuals or guides

  • Generate brainstorming frameworks for product development

AI is not used to create strategic or professional recommendations. All decisions remain human-made.

2.5 Quality Assurance Review

AI tools may support internal quality checks such as:

  • Identifying duplicated content

  • Highlighting unclear sentences

  • Comparing versions for consistency

Human review always takes priority.

3. What AI Does NOT Do at DERIT

AI is a tool, not a decision-maker.
It is not used for any of the following:

3.1 Real-Time Hazard or Emergency Assessment

AI does not interpret real-world emergency conditions, nor does it:

  • Predict hazards

  • Guarantee safe routes

  • Evaluate infrastructure integrity

  • Replace professional emergency management tools

3.2 Authoritative GIS Mapping

DERIT products may include AI-assisted formatting, but AI:

  • Does not create authoritative geographic data

  • Does not validate infrastructure or hazard datasets

  • Does not generate ground-truth mapping

GIS and dataset integration remain human-led and dataset-driven.

3.3 Tactical, Legal, Medical, or Engineering Guidance

DERIT does not use AI to provide:

  • Tactical recommendations

  • Medical advice

  • Legal interpretation

  • Engineering assessments

All materials remain educational in nature.

3.4 Autonomous Decision-Making

AI systems do not:

  • Publish content automatically

  • Modify live products

  • Adjust user data

  • Make changes without human supervision

Every AI output is reviewed, approved, or discarded by DERIT staff.

4. Data Privacy & AI
4.1 No Personal Data Training

DERIT does not train AI models on customer personal data.

We do not:

  • Upload customer emails

  • Upload customer names

  • Upload purchase records

  • Feed user documents into AI systems without explicit consent

4.2 Limited Contextual Use

If AI is used to improve user experience (e.g., help text), such use is:

  • Aggregated

  • Anonymized

  • Not linked to identifiable individuals

4.3 Third-Party AI Services

If DERIT uses external AI tools (e.g., OpenAI, Claude, or similar providers):

  • Those platforms process data under their own privacy policies

  • DERIT limits input to non-sensitive, non-identifiable material

We do not provide AI systems with private or confidential information.

5. Accuracy, Limitations & Disclaimer

AI-generated or AI-assisted content may contain:

  • Outdated information

  • Formatting inconsistencies

  • Hallucinations or incorrect assumptions

  • Misinterpretations of context

Because AI has known limitations, DERIT applies strict human review to mitigate errors, but cannot guarantee:

  • Absolute accuracy

  • Perfect reliability

  • Completeness or real-time precision

Therefore:

DERIT makes no warranties, express or implied, regarding AI-assisted content, and accepts no liability for decisions made or actions taken based on AI-generated material.

This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Route planning

  • Hazard interpretation

  • Resource availability

  • Mapping overlays

  • Field use of templates

All DERIT products are for educational and informational purposes only.

6. User Responsibility

By using DERIT products or this website, you agree that:

  • You will independently verify any critical information

  • You will not rely solely on AI-assisted DERIT content for emergency decisions

  • You understand that mapping data, hazard information, and route suggestions are inherently imperfect

  • You assume full responsibility for your own preparedness, travel, and safety decisions

DERIT provides tools — not guarantees, assurances, or directives.

7. Intellectual Property Rights & AI

DERIT retains all rights to:

  • AI-assisted content developed internally

  • AI-generated images, text, or layout ideas refined and approved by DERIT

  • Final creative works derived from AI-assisted processes

Users may not:

  • Copy DERIT content for commercial use

  • Use AI to replicate DERIT products

  • Upload DERIT materials into AI platforms for reproduction

  • Create derivative products mimicking DERIT formats or intellectual frameworks

All DERIT-generated and DERIT-approved materials remain protected under copyright.

8. AI Policy Updates

As AI technology evolves, DERIT may refine or expand this policy.
Any updates will be published on this page, and continued use of our site or products constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
